Smith Goes to Washington D.C. for Internship

Arkansas Tech University student Matthew Smith is combining his love of agriculture and public policy during an internship in Washington DC.

Smith, a junior from Hermitage, is interning with CropLife America, an agriculture trade association for the crop protection industry.

Throughout the summer, Smith has been involved in research and analysis.

“I have been working with our political action committee, doing legislative analysis, presenting my findings and attending meetings on behalf of CropLife America,” said Smith.

His hope is to better understand the role policy plays in the agriculture industry.

“I think agriculture policy is my passion because it’s so important to our well being,” said Smith. “An abundant food supply is necessary to us here in the United States and for people around the world. Legislatures at both state and federal levels must understand the crucial impact agriculture plays in our economy and everyday life. I hope to better grasp that process and find ways to help make an impact.”

Outside of his daily duties, Smith is networking with numerous other agriculture interns in the city.

“I have been tasked with helping develop the ag intern network,” said Smith. “We host social, professional and educational events throughout the summer for networking opportunities.”

In addition to working in Washington D.C., Smith will have several chances to represent CropLife America across the country.

“I recently got to fly to St. Louis for a State Affairs Committee meeting, and in July I’m getting to go to the Democratic National Convention,” said Smith. “CropLife America is continually giving me new opportunities and chances to build my resume and expand my network, for which I am very grateful.”
