Residence Life Helping Feed Hungry

The Arkansas Tech University residence halls are once again helping feed the hungry this holiday season.  The Office of Residential Life is sponsoring its annual “Helping Halls” food drive.

The halls are collecting sets of food that will be donated to the Salvation Army’s annual food drive, which provides a Thanksgiving meal to those in need.

All Arkansas Tech students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in the drive, and the residence hall that collects the most sets of food will win $250 for their residence hall.

A food sets consists of several items needed to prepare a traditional Thanksgiving meal, and organizers say it costs approximately $12 to make a complete meal set.

A complete set of food includes the following items:

  • Can of turkey gravy
  • Can of sweet potatoes
  • Can of green beans or peas
  • Box of stuffing
  • Box of mashed potatoes
  • Can of cranberries
  • Can of pie filling
  • Pie crust (not frozen)
  • Bag of marshmallows

Last year, Arkansas Tech faculty, staff and students collected about 400 sets of food, which helped provide meals for nearly two-thirds of the families the Salvation Army helped feed.  Organizers say they hope to collect another 400 sets of food this year to help the Salvation Army in its quest to ensure River Valley residents have a holiday meal.

Food or monetary donations should be dropped off beginning at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, November 16, in Doc Bryan Room 104.  Those groups donating full sets of food are asked to compile the sets in plastic bags to help with sorting.
