It wasn’t quite as fanciful as tiny reindeer and there were no jolly men in red suits, but the clothes packed into four midsized sedans driven by members of the Arkansas Tech University Presidential Leadership Cabinet were a welcome gift for three charitable organizations on Wednesday.
Students from the PLC collected the clothes in donation boxes around the Russellville campus from mid-November through mid-December.
The donated items were brought to the Alumni House, where PLC members sorted them into bags and prepared them for delivery to the MARVA Workshop, Inc., resale store on South Arkansas Ave., the Main Street Mission on East 2nd Street and the River Valley Shelter for Battered Women and Children thrift store on East Parkway.
On Wednesday, PLC members (from left) Lyndsey Harrison, Travis Flower, Hunter Mullins, Cora Housley, Kayla Eveld and Lindsey Branham joined Arkansas Tech Alumni Office staff members Alison Parks and Kelly Bostick in delivering the goods.
“Our PLC students have been busy the last month putting the donation boxes together and collecting the clothing items,” said Parks. “This was the third year for PLC to organize this philanthropic project, and I was very proud of how diligent the students were and the good job they did talking the program up among their fellow students.”
According to the Arkansas Tech Alumni Office Web site, the Presidential Leadership Cabinet “works in cooperation with the Tech administration to advance Arkansas Tech University and enhance its mission through outreach to prospective and current students, alumni and friends.”
PLC members meet on a monthly basis and volunteer at a variety of events throughout the academic year. Among their most important functions is assisting in commencement ceremonies each May, August and December.
Applicants must be full-time students who have completed at least 12 semester hours at Arkansas Tech and are in good standing with the school. The minimum cumulative grade point average for applicants is 3.0.
