P-Safe Shares Holiday Safety, Security Tips

The Arkansas Tech University Department of Public Safety has assembled a list of tips to keep members of the Arkansas Tech University community and their property safe and secure during the holiday season.

“We should always be prudent in our behavior and activities, but we need to enjoy this time, which traditionally is a time of joy and celebration,” said Joshua McMillian, chief of public safety at Arkansas Tech.

Recommendations include:

  • Do not broadcast your holiday vacation plans on social media.
  • Cut up and conceal gift packaging before putting it in the trash.
  • Have someone look after your home, including getting mail and newspapers.
  • Put lights on timers so they can go on and off during the day and evening.

College students can practice these behaviors to help keep them safe and protect their valuables and deter theft:

  • Lock the door to your residence, even if just going down the hall to another room or the restroom.
  • Place valuables out of site in vehicles and lock all the doors; a large number of thefts occur from vehicles because the owner left their door unlocked.
  • Take your valuables home with you over the holiday season.
  • Don’t leave your phone, tablet, wallet or electronic device sitting on a table unattended.
