Organization Spotlight: PRSSA

The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) Hanna E. Norton Chapter at Arkansas Tech is focused on preparing students to succeed in the PR industry.

Among several exciting events the group has on the agenda this year, they plan to attend Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) luncheons to take advantage of networking opportunities with professionals.

Through the national PRSSA website, students are able to access online job centers and current events about the public relations industry and attend national conferences.

Locally, the Hanna E. Norton Chapter of PRSSA creates and distributes a monthly newsletter that discusses past and upcoming events as well as professional tips.

Each month, PRSSA hosts a speaker meeting at which professionals in the industry tell students about their jobs and their path to success. All speaker meetings are held in the Baswell Techionery. Some topics are etiquette and résumé building, and sometime they are planned to correlate with class material.

This year, the group plans to increase the amount of fundraising they do to be able to attend more conferences and host more professional events.

One fundraiser PRSSA has teamed with SIFE to plan is a 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament.

President Alex Woods says his executive board motivates members by planning special events that will benefit them, providing wonderful outreach opportunities and offering the support of a national organization. Additionally, the group texts and emails members about functions so everyone stays up to date.

PRSSA has a monthly meeting for members and anyone interested in public relations. Announcements will be made on the Facebook group regarding time and venue. Anyone, regardless of major, is welcome to join.  Students who comprise the membership share an interest in learning more about careers in public relations and the PR industry.

“The thing that I am most excited about for the year is how well our executive board works together. Our slate of officers includes Brooke Smith, vice president, Mary Beth Jones, secretary, and Kim Brown, publicity chair,” Woods said.

PRSSA has more than 10,000 student and advisor members across the country. The organization helps students enhance theiir education, broaden their network and launch their career in public relations.
