One Win Away: Suns Host UAM Monday

Arkansas Tech’s dreams of a third consecutive berth in the Gulf South Conference Softball Tournament will go down to the final day of the regular season.

Nationally 23rd-ranked Arkansas-Monticello (46-9 overall, 23-5 GSC) defeated the Golden Suns 10-4 and 8-0 on Sunday, dropping Arkansas Tech (22-24, 12-16) into sole possession of fifth place in the GSC West Division standings.

Every team in the GSC West has now completed its regular season except UAM and Arkansas Tech, which will play a doubleheader beginning at noon Monday at the Chartwells Women’s Sports Complex in Russellville.

And with every other team in the clubhouse, it’s pretty simple now. UAM, Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist have clinched three of the four berths from the GSC West in the GSC Tournament, which begins on Friday in Southaven, Miss.

If the Golden Suns win one of their two games against UAM on Monday, Arkansas Tech will go to the GSC Tournament as the No. 4 seed.

If UAM wins both games, Delta State will earn the No. 4 seed and the Golden Suns will miss out on the postseason.

Radio station KCAB 980 AM and www.athletics.atu.edu will have live play-by-play of both games on Monday.

Sunday was Senior Day at the Chartwells Women’s Sports Complex. The Golden Suns honored their three seniors (photographed, from left-to-right): Taylor Gates of Paris, Texas; Roxie Palacios of Crosby, Texas; and Lyndsey McVay of Jonesboro.
