Muleriders Take Two From Wonder Boys

Southern Arkansas University bounced back from a Friday night loss to Arkansas Tech University by sweeping Saturday’s Great American Conference doubleheader at Goodheart Field in Magnolia.

The Muleriders (24-13 overall, 15-9 GAC) defeated the Wonder Boys 17-3 and 6-4 to win the series two games to one.

Arkansas Tech (17-23, 9-15) will host Southwestern Oklahoma State University for a three-game GAC series at Tech Field in Russellville on Friday, April 15, and Saturday, April 16. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.

Game One: SAU 17, Tech 3

Southern Arkansas collected 19 base hits and built an insurmountable early lead to defeat Arkansas Tech 17-3 in game one on Saturday.

The Muleriders led 11-0 after three innings. Justin Buchanan led the onslaught by going 4-for-5 with a home run, two doubles and seven runs batted in.

SAU starter Hunter Mayo (7-3) was the winning pitcher. He limited the Wonder Boys to three runs on six hits over six innings.

Arkansas Tech starting pitcher Ethan Taylor (0-2) allowed three runs on four hits in one and one-third innings.

Blake King clubbed a two-run home run and Josh Watkins had one RBI for the Wonder Boys.

Game Two: SAU 6, Tech 4

Billy Germaine went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs to lift Southern Arkansas to a 6-4 win over Arkansas Tech in the series finale on Saturday.

Germaine’s two-run shot down the left field line in the bottom of the third inning put the Muleriders in front for good at 4-2.

Landon Simpson (4-2) started on the mound for SAU and earned the win. He was charged with four runs, three of which were earned, on four hits in six innings. Jared Fielden earned his sixth save of 2016 by recording the final three outs.

Arkansas Tech starting pitcher Trent Armstrong (4-5) surrendered five runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits in four innings. Armstrong struck out six.

King, Seth Wheeler and Kaleb Warden had one RBI apiece for the Wonder Boys.
