Moving Up Arkansas Camp Comes to Tech

High school students and teachers from around the Natural State are on the Russellville campus of Arkansas Tech University this month for a Moving Up Arkansas camp.

The program provides the students with opportunities to sharpen their skills in disciplines such as algebra, civics, economics, English, geometry, health, physical science and world history.

Thirteen students representing the schools districts at Buffalo Island Central, Centerpoint, Clarksville, Dumas, El Dorado, Fort Smith, Lafayette County, Lincoln, Marion and Rogers are at the Arkansas Tech camp, which will continue through June 18.

“These students are all migrant education students and this program is designed for them,” said Karen Qualls, state initiatives coordinator and secondary programs coordinator for the Northeast Arkansas Migrant Education Cooperative. “Our migrant students are often highly mobile and this sometimes contributes to credit deficiencies, which is one of the reasons that we offer this summer school. Also, many of our students have never experienced life on a college campus and we are happy to give them the opportunity to visit and explore what post-secondary education has to offer them.”
