Massey's Heroics Lift Wonder Boys 61-58

Arkansas Tech senior point guard Laithe Massey made a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining to give the Wonder Boys a 61-58 win over the Benedict College Tigers in the first round of the men’s 2011 NCAA Division II Tournament South Regional at Spragins Hall in Huntsville, Ala., on Saturday night.

The nationally 14th-ranked Wonder Boys (25-5) trailed 29-25 at halftime and by as many as nine points in the second half, but Johnie Davis’ three-point play with 43 seconds to go allowed Arkansas Tech to pull even at 58-58.

After a Benedict turnover, Massey (photographed) made just his eighth 3-pointer of the season to put the Wonder Boys in front.

Benedict threw the ensuing inbounds pass away as Arkansas Tech secured its third consecutive first-round win in the NCAA Tournament.

Jeremy Dunbar and James Causey scored 15 points apiece to pace the Wonder Boys. Davis had nine points, while Massey finished with six points, six assists and six rebounds.

Xavier Collins led Benedict (21-8) with 16 points.
