March Madness Returns to Russellville

The NCAA Tournament is coming back to Tucker Coliseum in Russellville for a second consecutive year.

Arkansas Tech University will host the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball South Regional beginning with four first-round gamesĀ on Friday, March 11.

The regional will continue with a pair of semifinal games at 6 and 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, and the regional championship game will be played at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 14.

The champion of the NCAA Division II South Regional will advance to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight March 22-25 in St. Joseph, Mo.

The Arkansas Tech Golden Suns, defending NCAA Division II South Region champions, are the No. 1 seed in this week’s regional.

Arkansas Tech (27-2) will face No. 8 seed Fort Valley State (22-9) in the first round at 6 p.m. on Friday.

Other first-round games will pit No. 3 seed Florida Southern (24-4) against No. 6 seed Ouachita Baptist (20-8) at 1 p.m., No. 2 seed Delta State (26-3) against No. 7 seed North Alabama (21-6) at 3 p.m. and No. 4 seed Florida Tech (23-8) against No. 5 seed Tampa (21-7) at 8:30 p.m.

This is the 20th time in the 34-year history of Arkansas Tech women’s basketball that the Golden Suns have qualified for postseason national tournament play. Arkansas Tech won the 1992 and 1993 NAIA national championships and the Suns were NCAA Division II national runners-up in 1999.

Arkansas Tech is making its 10th NCAA Tournament appearance since first becoming eligible for the event in 1998. The Golden Suns were NCAA Division II South Region champions in 1998, 1999 and 2010.
