Lyon Slips Past Wonder Boys 5-4

Lyon College used five scoreless innings from its bullpen to hold off Arkansas Tech University 5-4 in a non-conference baseball game at Batesville on Wednesday.

Arkansas Tech led 4-3 after four-and-a-half innings, but the Scots scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the fifth on a Wonder Boys’ error.

Lyon’s bullpen took it from there, limiting ATU to no runs on one hit over the final four innings to secure the victory.

Brody McCrary (1-0) was named the winning pitcher. He allowed no runs in one inning before giving way to Ryan Cortez, who struck out two over three innings of work, and Tyler Tognarine, who worked a scoreless ninth inning for his first save of the season.

Arkansas Tech starting pitcher Geoffrey Birkemeier (0-1) was charged with five runs, two of which were earned, on four hits over five innings.

Tech’s Zach Klockowski went 3-for-5 with a run scored, while Kyle Love recorded three runs batted in and Dylan McDearmon had one RBI.

The Wonder Boys will host Missouri Western State University for a three-game series on Friday, Feb. 10, and Saturday, Feb. 11. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday (single game) and noon Saturday (doubleheader). Live coverage will be available at www.arkansastechsports.com.
