Jimeson, Martin Top Senior Student-Athletes

Shanda Jimeson and Danny Martin were named the top senior student-athletes at Arkansas Tech University for the 2010-11 academic year during a banquet at the Chambers Cafeteria East Banquet Hall on Wednesday night.

Jimeson, second baseman for the Golden Suns softball team, was selected as the outstanding female senior student-athlete. Martin, linebacker for the Wonder Boys football team, was selected as the outstanding male senior student-athlete.

Tech coaches nominate student-athletes for the awards, and the Arkansas Tech Faculty Athletic Committee selects the winners based on the nominees’ academic record, community service, leadership and athletic accomplishments.

Jimeson is working on her fourth letter as a member of the Arkansas Tech softball program. She is a two-time member of the All-Gulf South Conference West Division softball team, a three-time member of the GSC Academic Honor Roll and a two-time GSC All-Academic softball team selection.

A native of Mansfield, Texas, Jimeson has a team-best batting average of .350 with four home runs and 23 runs batted in this season. She has already helped the Golden Suns win two GSC West Division titles (2008 and 2009), and Arkansas Tech is in first place in the GSC West with two weeks remaining in the regular season this year.

Martin earned four letters with the Arkansas Tech football team from 2007-10. He appeared in 43 games and made 39 starts at linebacker. He made 161 career tackles, including 20.5 tackles for a loss and 8.5 quarterback sacks.

Martin was a four-time member of the GSC Academic Honor Roll, a three-time GSC All-Academic football team member and a two-time academic all-district selection. His play helped the Wonder Boys win 23 games over the past four years and reach the 2009 NCAA Division II Playoffs. He is from Tulsa, Okla.
