International Students Volunteer

A group of Arkansas Tech international students visited the Russellville Boys and Girls Club on Friday in honor of Nickelodeon Worldwide Day of Play.

The Tech students helped the children at the club with arts and crafts and taught the kids several clapping games.  Additionally, the Tech students also worked to raise awareness about diversity and differences among various cultures.

Most of the international students who participated are involved with the English Language Institute. Kristina Mariswamy, graduate assistant for the International and Multicultural Student Services Office, says, “Even though our students may not have had perfect English, it didn’t affect the kids’ ability to understand.”

Mariswamy also described the children’s interest in learning about the international students’ cultures. “Some of our students helped kids write their names in Chinese and even taught them how to say a few words.”

Because this event was such a success, Mariswamy hopes to see the volunteer projects continue.
