Hoops for Heart Raises Thousands

 

The annual Hoops for Heart 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament was held last Thursday in Tucker Coliseum to raise money for the American Heart Association.

Teams and supporters were welcomed to the event by Katherine Gaines, a former Arkansas Tech student who was part of a previous class who put on Hoops for Heart. She later discovered her own heart issues and shared her story with the crowd.

The tournament began at 3:30 p.m. and teams played until nearly 9 p.m.

Here is a list of winners:

Men’s Division 3-on-3:

First place: “Tech Alumni”- Laithe Massey, Irvin Humphrey, Mark Vilavanh, and Russell Zachery

Second place: “Da Bears”- Matt Haney, Blake Mitchem, Steven Tew, Chase White, and Garret Glover

Women’s Division 3-on-3:

First place: “Saint United”- Niki Possage, Cindy Adler, Mary Buford, Julie Smith, and Chelsea Massey

Second place: “United” – Jenny Vinning, Rebel Clay, Jilliann Jacimore, Rachel Mouser, and Amber Earls

Men’s Division 3-Point Contest:

First place: Darius Walton

Second place: Daniel Cash

Women’s Division 3-Point Contest Winner: Alex Gattis

Slam Dunk Winner: Kyron Ware

Half-Court Shot Winner: Octavious May (made shot on first attempt)

This year, the class has raised more than $3,800 for the American Heart Association. They are still in the process of collecting donations.

Hoops for Heart is a volunteer event that involves playing basketball to promote heart health. The event is hosted by the physical education organization and administration class. All proceeds from the tournament and the mini games will benefit the American Heart Association.

Last year, Arkansas Tech Hoops for Heart was recognized at the Arkansas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (ArkAHPERD) Conference in Little Rock this for organizing the most successful collegiate Hoops for Heart program in the state. Read more about this honor.
