Helping Halls Celebrates 10 Years

An Arkansas Tech University tradition of students providing holiday meals to Arkansas River Valley residents in need will continue in 2016 with the 10th annual Helping Halls program.

Coordinated by the John Tucker Chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary and in conjunction with the Russellville chapter of the Salvation Army, Helping Halls challenges Arkansas Tech students living in residence halls to collect as many holiday food kits as possible.

The residence hall that wins the 2016 competition will receive a trophy and a banner for display in its lobby. The winning hall will be announced on Monday, Nov. 26.

Arkansas Tech students donated 243 food kits with an estimated value of $2,997.09 during Helping Halls 2015. Over the nine-year span of the program, Tech students have donated 2,552 holiday food kits to the Salvation Army.

One food kit consists of the following items:

  • Can or packet of turkey gravy
  • Can of sweet potatoes
  • Can of green beans
  • Can of corn
  • Can of cranberries
  • Pie filling
  • Box of stuffing
  • Box of mashed potatoes
  • Bag of marshmallows
  • One pie crust

The approximate cost of each food kit is $13. The 2016 Helping Halls goal is to collect 300 total food kits.

All kits must be delivered to Young Ballroom between 9 a.m.-noon on Friday, Nov. 18. Each kit should be double bagged and tied at the top when delivered to the ballroom.
