Arkansas Tech University senior Mike Harris is spending the summer in Rhode Island as part of an internship.
Harris, a journalism major with an emphasis in public relations, is interning at Brown University through the Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I).
According to the ACUHO-I website, member institutions post open positions for a variety of roles within student affairs, including residence life, facilities, conference services, family housing, housing assignments and food service. Individuals interested in student affairs are able to apply for the positions as part of an internship program.
Harris was selected to serve as a resident assistant for the pre-college summer program at Brown University. During the program, more than 5,000 high school students from around the world will attend courses at the university in order to learn more about college level academics.
Harris hopes to make a difference by sharing his Tech experiences.
“Having served as a resident assistant at Arkansas Tech, I am really hoping to share some of my experiences at Tech with students and provide guidance as they begin their collegiate endeavors,” said Harris
Scheduled to graduate in December, Harris hopes to pursue a career in student affairs.
“My hope is this internship will provide valuable insight as I begin my student affairs journey,” he said. “Getting to work in a housing program at an urban university will help me better understand the overall role of university housing.”
Harris said the biggest adjustment will be the distance from friends and family.
“This is my first time traveling a great distance from home without my family or any chaperones,” he added. “I’m a little nervous, but I am excited to see how this experience helps me transition to a student affairs professional.”
