Guerrero awarded Briley scholarship

Amanda Guerrero of Magazine, an incoming freshman at Arkansas Tech University-Ozark Campus, is this fall’s recipient of the Vanesa Briley Memorial Scholarship.

Named after Vanesa Briley of Ozark, who passed away in 2008, the scholarship is worth $500 and will aid Guerrero in her pursuit of a Licensed Practical Nursing degree and goal of becoming a pediatric nurse.

“I’m determined to further my education and create a promising future for myself, but I realize I need financial help fulfilling my dream,” she said. “I think nursing is a very important field for people that desire to help others, and I’m one of those people. I love working with children, and that’s why I decided I wanted to become a pediatric nurse.

“I want to know that I’m making a difference in this world and, to me, helping a child with a disease or medical problem makes a huge difference. Just knowing that someone is there for them is enough for me. I want to be that person that comforts them and lets them know everything is going to be all right.”

Guerrero is the daughter of Scarlett Phelps and a graduate of Booneville High School, where she was on the Principal’s Honor Roll, a member of the Accelerated Reader Program and a recipient of the Biology Award.
