GSC Honors Santos for Big Week

Arkansas Tech forward Natalia Santos is the Gulf South Conference West Division women’s basketball player of the week for the second time this season.

Santos, a 6-foot-2 forward from Sao Paulo, Brazil, averaged 19.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game last week while helping the Golden Suns earn wins over Henderson State and Southern Arkansas.

Santos (photographed) was a combined 15-of-27 from the field against HSU and SAU. She also recorded six assists and five steals in Tech’s two wins.

Santos was previously named GSC West player of the week this season on Dec. 15, 2010.

For the season, Santos ranks third in the GSC in scoring (17.8 points per game) and field goal percentage (.584). She is 10th in the league in rebounding (7.5 per game).

Santos ranks ninth in NCAA Division II in field goal percentage, and her efficiency has helped the Golden Suns rank No. 1 in all of NCAA women’s basketball in shooting.

Arkansas Tech’s .513 field goal percentage as a team is better than even NCAA Division I leader Connecticut (.507).

The nationally fifth-ranked Golden Suns (18-2 overall, 7-1 GSC) will hit the road for a 2 p.m. game against the Arkansas-Monticello Cotton Blossoms at Steelman Field House in Monticello on Saturday, Feb. 12.

That game, along with the nightcap between the nationally 14th-ranked Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (17-3, 8-0) and the UAM Boll Weevils at 4 p.m., can be heard on KWKK 100.9 FM.
