Sunday Split for Golden Suns, Lady Tigers

Arkansas Tech and Ouachita Baptist split a Gulf South Conference softball doubleheader at the Chartwells Women’s Sports Complex in Russellville on Sunday.

The Golden Suns (26-16 overall, 16-6 GSC) won Sunday’s first game 4-1, but the Lady Tigers (18-18, 13-8) captured the nightcap 8-0.

Ouachita Baptist, which is in second place in the GSC West Division softball standings, took 3-of-4 games from GSC West-leading Arkansas Tech this weekend to cut the Golden Suns’ lead in the division to two-and-a-half games with two weekends of regular season play remaining.

Ouachita Baptist took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning of game one on a Bailey Sanders RBI single, and it looked for a long time like that one run would be enough for the Lady Tigers.

Arkansas Tech was held scoreless for five and two-third innings, but Amy Horne broke through with a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to put the Suns in front 2-1.

Horne later scored on a throwing error and Jessica Fields added an RBI single to make it 4-1 going to the seventh and final inning.

Horne, who was the starting pitcher for the Suns, returned to the circle and pitched a scoreless seventh inning to preserve the win for Arkansas Tech.

A freshman from Harrison, Horne (3-0) limited OBU to one run on six hits while striking out six in seven innings.

Fields went 3-for-3 in Sunday’s opener.

Game two was all Ouachita from the outset. The Lady Tigers scored three runs in the first inning and five more runs in the second inning. The game was stopped early because of the eight-run lead after five innings mercy rule.

The Golden Suns will visit Delta State for a four-game GSC softball series on Friday, April 22, and Saturday, April 23.
