Record Crowd Watches Suns Win in Five Sets

The largest crowd to ever watch a volleyball match on the Arkansas Tech campus saw the Golden Suns knock off the nationally 23rd-ranked Harding Lady Bisons 25-16, 21-25, 25-17, 20-25, 15-5 at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Thursday night.

Arkansas Tech (15-1 overall, 6-0 Great American Conference) won its 15th consecutive match and assumed sole possession of first place in the GAC standings in front of a crowd of 1,045 fans, which broke both the school record and the GAC record for volleyball attendance.

The Golden Suns took control of the fifth and decisive set by winning seven of the first 10 points. Tech led 9-5 before scoring the last six points of the match to pull away for the victory.

Sara Motsinger (photographed) led the Golden Suns with 19 kills, three of which came during Tech’s 6-0 run to end the match. Thabata Galvao added 11 kills and four blocks, while Brittany Ryan had 10 kills and a career-high 13 blocks.

Laura Farney notched nine kills and a career-high 26 digs. Brennae Benda contributed 28 digs, and Amber Cerrillos made 49 assists and 11 digs.

Mollie Arnold had 12 kills and 21 digs for Harding (14-3, 5-1), which dropped its second consecutive match.

The Golden Suns will participate in the Holiday Inn Express Volleyball Classic in Denton, Texas, this weekend.
