Suns Avoid Elimination With 2-1 Win

Arkansas Tech extended its 2012 softball season for at least one more day by defeating the East Central University Lady Tigers 2-1 in an elimination bracket game at the Great American Conference Tournament in Bentonville on Thursday night.

The Golden Suns (16-30) advance to play in another elimination game at 11 a.m. Friday against Southwestern Oklahoma State. The contest can be heard on KCAB 980 AM or http://athletics.atu.edu.

East Central (27-18), which had swept a four-game series from Arkansas Tech last weekend, saw its season come to an end with the loss.

Arkansas Tech took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Maddie Roncketto singled and Hayley Hudson hit her third home run of the season to put the Golden Suns in front.

Tech starting pitcher Rachel Keeton pitched shutout softball for six and two-thirds innings, but a solo home run by pinch-hitter Kayci Snider with two outs in the bottom of the seventh kept East Central alive.

Keeton (6-16) recovered to get the next hitter, Lacey Williams, to fly out to center field as the Golden Suns snapped an eight-game losing streak.
