Golden Suns Sweep GAC Weekly Awards

Arkansas Tech took over sole possession of first place in the Great American Conference volleyball standings last week, and the league office recognized three of the student-athletes who made that possible when the GAC weekly awards were announced on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

Arkansas Tech senior Laura Farney was named GAC co-offensive player of the week, sharing that honor with Southeastern Oklahoma State’s Lunden Azuara.

Meanwhile, Tech junior Brittany Ryan earned the GAC defensive player of the week award and Tech sophomore Amber Cerrillos was named GAC setter of the week.

Farney, Ryan and Cerrillos helped the Golden Suns go 2-0 in league play and 4-2 overall last week.

Arkansas Tech defeated Harding University in five sets on Thursday in a match-up of two previously undefeated teams in GAC play.

Farney made nine kills and 26 digs in the win over the Lady Bisons. For the week, she registered 78 kills.

Ryan had the match of her career so far against Harding. She notched 10 kills and a career-high 13 blocks in the victory. Ryan finished a busy week with 38 blocks.

Cerrillos recorded 49 assists, 11 digs and three blocks in front of 1,045 fans when the Golden Suns defeated Harding. She recorded 232 assists in six matches last week.
