Golden Suns Sweep Cotton Blossoms

Laura Farney’s ninth double-double of the season led the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns to a straight sets victory over the Arkansas-Monticello Cotton Blossoms in Great American Conference volleyball at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Thursday night.

Farney (photographed) made 13 kills and 10 digs as the Golden Suns won by scores of 25-16, 25-16, 25-23.

Arkansas Tech (28-3 overall, 12-0 GAC) collected its 20th consecutive home win, notched its 11th straight victory overall and maintained sole possession of first place in the GAC standings with four regular season matches remaining.

Carly Florian continued her late-season surge for the Golden Suns with 11 kills. She has averaged 11 kills per match over her last three outings after averaging just 3.8 kills per match in her first 16 matches of the season.

Sara Motsinger and Thabata Galvao added seven kills apiece, and that duo was part of a dominant night at net for Arkansas Tech. Motsinger had a match-high four blocks. Galvao, Brittany Ryan and Amber Cerrillos added three blocks each.

By comparison, UA-Monticello (4-20, 2-10) had just one team block.

Cerrillos made 33 assists and Brennae Benda recorded 10 digs for the Golden Suns, who completed a regular season sweep of the Cotton Blossoms.

UAM’s Amy Kleypas had a match-high 16 kills.

Arkansas Tech will visit East Central University for a 7 p.m. GAC match in Ada, Okla., on Tuesday, Oct. 25.
