Golden Suns Stay in Top Five

Arkansas Tech is ranked No. 5 in the USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II women’s basketball top 25 for a second consecutive week.

Head coach Dave Wilbers (photographed) and the Golden Suns (22-1 overall, 9-1 Gulf South Conference) maintained their national ranking after a pair of close calls in league play last week.

Tech defeated Henderson State 90-86 in overtime at Arkadelphia on Thursday.

The Suns needed a Jessica Weatherford layup with 9.7 seconds left and a pair of misses by Harding in the final 3.3 seconds to defeat the Lady Bisons 62-61 in Russellville on Saturday.

In addition to keeping the No. 5 spot in the national poll, those wins also allowed Arkansas Tech to maintain first place in the GSC West Division. The Suns are one game in front of second-place Delta State with four regular season games remaining.

Tech will host Ouachita Baptist at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Admission to Tucker Coliseum will be free for those with a valid Tech identification card. Ticket offices and doors will open at 4:30 p.m.

The Golden Suns will tangle with nationally 12th-ranked Delta State at 4 p.m. Saturday in Cleveland, Miss.

Russellville radio station KWKK 100.9 FM and www.athletics.atu.edu will have live play-by-play coverage of both games.
