Golden Suns Start 15-0 for First Time Ever

Arkansas Tech is 15-0 in women’s basketball for the first time ever after the nationally 13th-ranked Golden Suns defeated the Henderson State Lady Reddies 73-58 in Gulf South Conference play at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Thursday night.

The Golden Suns (15-0 overall, 2-0 GSC) made 11 of their first 15 field goal tries in the second half to turn a 35-27 halftime lead into a 63-42 edge with 6:09 left.

Tech coasted home from there as it broke the 30-year old school record for best start to a women’s basketball season. The 1979-80 Golden Suns held that distinction for three decades thanks to their 14-0 start.

Jenny Vining and Natalia Santos had 21 points apiece in Thursday’s win. Vining added five rebounds and five steals, while Santos grabbed six rebounds and blocked four shots.

Laura Beth Anderson contributed 10 points, five assists and four steals for the Golden Suns. Jessica Weatherford had eight points and three steals.

Danyelle Harris led Henderson State (9-8, 0-2) with 19 points, 14 of which came in the first half.

Arkansas Tech will look to remain unbeaten when it visits Harding University for a 5:30 p.m. contest on Saturday. Russellville radio station KWKK 100.9 FM and www.athletics.atu.edu will have live play-by-play coverage from Rhodes Field House in Searcy.
