Golden Suns Ranked 3rd in Final National Poll

Arkansas Tech University is ranked No. 3 in the final 2010-11 USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II women’s basketball top 25 poll, which was released on Tuesday by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

Head coach Dave Wilbers and the Golden Suns finished the season with an overall record of 30-3.

Arkansas Tech won the Gulf South Conference West Division regular season title, the GSC Tournament championship and the NCAA Division II South Region crown for a second consecutive season.

It was the eighth 30-win season in the 34-year history of Golden Suns basketball.

Arkansas Tech’s season ended with a 69-58 loss to the Michigan Tech Huskies on March 22 in the national quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Michigan Tech went on to reach the national championship game before dropping a 69-50 decision to Clayton State (Ga.) on March 25.

Clayton State is No. 1 in the final USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II top 25 of the season. Michigan Tech is No. 2.

After Arkansas Tech in the third spot, fourth-ranked Northwest Missouri State and No. 5 Metro State (Colo.) round out the top five.

The Golden Suns have now been ranked in the USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II women’s basketball top 25 poll for 29 consecutive weeks, including 25 straight weeks in the top 10.

This is the second consecutive year in which Arkansas Tech has finished the season ranked among the top 10 teams in NCAA Division II women’s basketball. The Golden Suns were sixth in the final national poll of the 2009-10 season.
