Golden Suns Picked Second in GAC Basketball

Great American Conference women’s basketball coaches are forecasting a tight three-team race between Harding University, Arkansas Tech University and Southwestern Oklahoma State University for the 2012-13 league championship.

Great American Conference women’s basketball coaches are forecasting a tight three-team race between Harding University, Arkansas Tech University and Southwestern Oklahoma State University for the 2012-13 league championship.

The GAC office in Russellville released the preseason poll on Wednesday, Oct. 24.

Harding is the preseason favorite to win the 2012-13 GAC women’s basketball championship. The Lady Bisons received five first-place votes and a total of 59 points in the balloting.

Arkansas Tech is a close second in the poll with three first-place votes and 58 points. Southwestern Oklahoma State picked up the other first-place vote and a total of 54 points.

From there, the voting dropped off to Henderson State University (4th, 39 points), Ouachita Baptist University (5th, 35 points), Southeastern Oklahoma State University (6th, 27 points), the University of Arkansas at Monticello (T-7th, 22 points) and East Central University (T-7th, 22 points). Southern Arkansas University received nine points in the voting and is picked to finish last in the GAC this season.

Arkansas Tech returns two starters from a team that was 22-4 overall and regular season champion of the GAC in 2011-12.

Head coach Dave Wilbers begins his sixth season as head women’s basketball coach at Arkansas Tech with a career record of 128-25.

The Golden Suns will open their 2012-13 season by hosting Christian Brothers University for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference game on Nov. 13.

Arkansas Tech will launch its basketball season with a Monday Madness event for fans on Monday, Nov. 5.
