Golden Suns Move On to GAC Semifinals

Arkansas Tech University advanced to the semifinal round of the 2012 Great American Conference Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 victory over the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms at Rhodes Field House in Searcy on Thursday.

The Golden Suns (26-9) defeated UAM 25-13, 25-5, 25-20 in the opening round of the second annual GAC Volleyball Tournament. Arkansas Tech won the inaugural event last season.

Amber Cerrillos had 30 assists and seven service aces for the Golden Suns. Kaitlyn White made 14 kills, while Tech’s Brittany Ryan and Sara Motsinger added nine kills apiece. Morgan McKellar chipped in 16 digs.

Arkansas-Monticello finished its 2012 volleyball season with an overall record of 11-24.

With the win over the Cotton Blossoms, Arkansas Tech moves on to face Southern Arkansas University (23-11) in the GAC Tournament semifinals at 3:30 p.m. today (Friday, Nov. 16).

The Lady Muleriders came from behind to defeat East Central University 25-22, 12-25, 15-25, 25-18, 15-11 in first-round action on Thursday.

The Golden Suns defeated Southern Arkansas twice during the regular season.
