Golden Suns Host Two Matches Today

Arkansas Tech will complete the most exhausting five-day stretch of its 2011 volleyball schedule by playing two non-conference home matches at Tucker Coliseum today (Monday, Oct. 3).

The Golden Suns (17-3) will host Lyon College at 3 p.m. and Central Baptist at 7 p.m. Admission will be free. The matches have been designated by head volleyball coach Kristy Bayer as “Little Techster Kids Klub Day” at Tucker Coliseum.

When today’s action is complete, Arkansas Tech will have played seven volleyball matches in the span of five days.

The Golden Suns began this grueling stretch with a five-set win over Harding University last Thursday. It was Arkansas Tech’s 15th consecutive win and it put the Suns in sole possession of first place in the Great American Conference volleyball standings.

Less than 19 hours after that victory, Arkansas Tech was in Denton, Texas, to begin play in the Holiday Inn Express and Suites Classic.

The Golden Suns went 2-2 in Texas. They dropped a five-set match against Texas A&M-International on Friday afternoon, but they bounced back with wins over classic host Texas Woman’s University (3-0) later on Friday and Texas A&M-Commerce (3-1) on Saturday morning.

Arkansas Tech wrapped up its portion of the classic by losing to Arkansas-Fort Smith in straight sets on Saturday evening.

Now the Golden Suns are back home, where they have won 12 consecutive matches dating back to last season. It has been almost a full calendar year since Arkansas Tech lost a home volleyball match.

Christian Brothers defeated the Suns at Tucker Coliseum on Oct. 5, 2010, but the Suns have been perfect under the dome since that 3-0 setback.
