Golden Suns Top VSU in Tourney Opener

Arkansas Tech’s efficiency on offense lifted the Golden Suns to a 25-22, 25-19, 19-25, 25-21 victory over the Valdosta State Lady Blazers on Friday afternoon in Tech’s first match at the 2010 University of Alabama in Huntsville/Country Inn and Suites Tournament.

The Golden Suns (9-3) had a team hitting percentage of .289 as they ended Valdosta State’s five-match winning streak.

It was Tech’s third-highest team hitting percentage of the season. The Suns hit .500 against Champion Baptist earlier this week and they hit .293 in a win over the University of the District of Columbia on Sept. 10.

With the victory, Tech extended its winning streak to five in a row.

Laura Farney recorded her seventh double-double of the season for the Golden Suns with 17 kills and 13 digs.

Sarah Von Lienen (photographed) added 14 kills and Ashlynn Hamrick had 13 kills against just one attack error in 22 attempts.

Tech’s Kera Dukic made 43 assists, Brennae Benda had 15 digs, Marcela Mascarenhas recorded 12 digs and Thabata Galvao added 10 digs in the win.

Chelsea Logan and Ruthie King led the Lady Blazers (5-4) with 11 kills apiece.

Arkansas Tech will face tournament host Alabama-Huntsville at 5 p.m. Friday.
