Arkansas Tech University completed an undefeated run through the inaugural Great American Conference women’s tennis schedule by defeating the Henderson State Lady Reddies 9-0 at the Chartwells Women’s Sports Complex in Russellville on Friday.
With the win, the Golden Suns (15-5 overall, 6-0 GAC) clinched the regular season GAC women’s tennis championship outright.
Arkansas Tech finished one match in front of Harding University (19-7, 5-1) in the final 2012 GAC women’s tennis standings.
It is the second women’s tennis conference title in school history, and the first league championship for Golden Suns tennis since the 1995 Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference title.
Arkansas Tech captured its fourth regular season GAC championship of the 2011-12 academic year. Tech also won regular season GAC titles in volleyball, men’s basketball and women’s basketball.
The victory was the 10th straight win for the Golden Suns, who are now two wins away from tying the school record for women’s tennis victories in a season. The 2008-09 Golden Suns established that record by winning 17 matches.
As regular season GAC champion, Arkansas Tech will receive a bye in the first round of the inaugural GAC Tennis Tournament at Arkadelphia.
The Golden Suns will play in the semifinal round at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 20.
If Arkansas Tech wins, it will play in the GAC Tournament championship match at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 21.
