First-Place Golden Suns Pick Up Road Win

Two hitters were better than one at Bloomer Sullivan Gymnasium in Durant, Okla., on Thursday night.

Arkansas Tech’s Sara Motsinger and Laura Farney combined for 37 kills as the Golden Suns defeated the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm 25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 25-16 in a key Great American Conference volleyball match.

Tech (20-3 overall, 7-0 GAC) remained undefeated in league play, while Southeastern Oklahoma State (8-13, 5-2) fell two matches behind the Golden Suns in the GAC standings.

The combination of Motsinger and Farney helped Arkansas Tech overcome Lunden Azuara, who made a match-high 27 kills for the Savage Storm. But no other Southeastern player had more than eight kills, and Azuara took more than half (76-of-148) of the Savage Storm’s kill attempts.

Motsinger established a new career high with 20 kills. Farney notched 17 kills and 16 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.

Amber Cerrillos also recorded her fifth double-double of 2011. The Arkansas Tech setter made 47 assists and 10 digs.

Tech’s Brennae Benda led all players with 26 digs. Taylor Brown contributed 16 digs and Marcela Mascarenhas had 10 digs.

The Golden Suns will travel on to Weatherford on Friday for a 6 p.m. GAC match against Southwestern Oklahoma State.
