Garrett Surges to Top-12 Finish at Regional

Arkansas Tech University’s Jack Garrett fired a 2-under par round of 70 on Wednesday to finish in a tie for 12th place at the 2012 NCAA Division II Midwest/South Central Men’s Golf Championship at Jefferson City Country Club in Jefferson City, Mo.

Only six players in the 149-man field posted a lower final-round score than Garrett. The sophomore from Fouke completed the 54-hole event with a 3-over total of 219.

Garrett started his final round on No. 10 and opened with eight straight pars. A birdie on the par-4 18th hole kick-started his move up the leaderboard, and a birdie at the par-5 second hole moved him to 2-under for the day.

His lone dropped shot of the day came on a bogey at No. 4, but he bounced back with a birdie on the par-5 seventh hole and closed with back-to-back pars to shoot 70.

Garrett’s par on the par-4 ninth hole was the final act by an Arkansas Tech student-athlete during the 2011-12 academic year. All Wonder Boys and Golden Suns athletic competition for the school year is now complete.

The closing score of 70 was Garrett’s lowest round of the tournament. He shot 73 in the opening round on Monday and 76 in the second round on Tuesday.

Josh Creel of Central Oklahoma won the individual title at the regional with a 54-hole total of 5-under 211. He shot 71 on Wednesday.

Garrett, the Great American Conference men’s golf player of the year, finished the 2011-12 season with a 73.2 scoring average.
