GAC Coaches Forecast Good Year for Tech Golf

Arkansas Tech University is the 2016-17 preseason favorite to win the Great American Conference women’s golf championship and is picked in the top two of the GAC men’s golf preseason poll.

The Golden Suns are defending GAC women’s golf champions. They received seven first-place votes and a total of 49 points in the 2016-17 preseason poll of league head coaches.

Henderson State University (2nd, 41 points), Southwestern Oklahoma State University (3rd, 39 points), Southern Nazarene University (4th, 28 points), Southern Arkansas University (5th, 24 points), the University of Arkansas-Monticello (6th, 23 points), Harding University (7th, 13 points) and Northwestern Oklahoma State University (8th, seven points) completed the 2016-17 GAC women’s golf preseason poll.

Southwestern Oklahoma State edged Arkansas Tech as the top pick of GAC coaches to win the conference men’s golf title in 2016-17. SWOSU collected five first-place votes and 58 points in the balloting, while the Wonder Boys earned two first-place votes and 56 points.

League coaches believe that Henderson State (3rd, 51 points) and Southeastern Oklahoma State (4th, 49 points) could also factor in the championship chase.

Southern Arkansas (5th, 30 points), Southern Nazarene (6th, 29 points), Harding (7th, 22 points), UA-Monticello (8th, 21 points) and Northwestern Oklahoma State (9th, eight points) rounded out the 2016-17 GAC men’s golf preseason poll.

Arkansas Tech will begin the fall portions of its 2016-17 golf schedules next month. The Golden Suns will compete in the Central Region Preview Sept. 5-7 in Olathe, Kan., while the Wonder Boys will play in the University of Nebraska-Kearney Fall Invitational Sept. 12-13.
