Freshmen Arrive at Tech Saturday

Following move in, students will have several opportunities to learn more about the university and meet new students as part of Welcome Week festivities. Entering freshmen will move into their residence halls Saturday, August 24.  That afternoon, students will begin meeting with their resident assistants to learn more about the university and how to get connected to campus. At 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, a parent farewell is planned.  The informal gathering will take place in the Doc Bryan Rotunda and will give parents the opportunity to enjoy refreshments and ask any final questions before returning home. That evening, new students will connect with other freshmen during the Playfair at 8 p.m. in Tucker Coliseum.  Following the Playfair, students will be able to Tech the Night Away at the Baswell Techionery.  The event features free food, free giveaways and the opportunity to meet other students. On Sunday, August 25, students will be able to beat the heat by taking part in the Splish Splash Bash on the lawn at Caraway Hall.  The event starts at 1 p.m. and will include obstacle courses, water slides and interactive games.  Starting at 2 p.m., students will also be able to enjoy several intramural activities.  The Hull gyms and the Campus Recreation Fields will be open for students wishing to play basketball, volleyball, dodge ball, flag football, Frisbee golf, birdie golf and softball. Sunday evening, students will gather at Tucker Coliseum at 8 p.m. to enjoy hypnotist McVicar the Trickster.  As part of the show, McVicar will attempt to hypnotize several Arkansas Tech students. Beginning Monday, August 26, students will take part in the new student orientation program, which is designed to provide students with information about the transition to college.  Access the orientation schedule. Incoming freshmen will be able to learn about the numerous student organizations at Tech and about area businesses at 6 p.m. on Monday, August 26 when Arkansas Tech hosts the annual Involvement Fair at the Hindsman Belltower. Following the fair, students will be able to enjoy a complimentary movie at the belltower beginning at 9 p.m. On Tuesday, August 27, students will continue their new student orientation activities. That evening, students will take part in a pep rally prior to a scrimmage by the football team.  The pep rally will take place at 5:30 p.m., and the Green and Gold Scrimmage will begin at 6 p.m. Classes for the semester begin at 7 a.m. Wednesday, August 28. Students will be able to snag a Tech t-shirt Wednesday, August 28 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Baswell Techionery.  Students may trade a high school or another university shirt for the Tech shirt, or they may purchase a shirt for $1. The Greek community will host Meet the Greeks at 6 p.m. that evening.  The informational event is designed to help students learn more about the Greek community at Arkansas Tech. At 9 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28 Campus Recreation will offer Watermelon Fest at the Campus Recreation Fields.  The event will include a watermelon seed spitting competition and several recreational games including flag football, disc golf and ultimate Frisbee. On Thursday, August 29, students will be able to learn more about campus ministries at Tech.  The various campus ministries will join together at 6 p.m. at the Campus Recreation Fields to host a cookout.  Following the cookout, many of the campus ministries will offer an open house. At 9 p,m, students will be able to enjoy a movie in the Doc Bryan Student Services Building Lecture Hall.  The movie and snacks are complimentary to Tech students. The annual Tech Rave and Blacklight Party is scheduled for Friday, August 30 at 9 p.m. in the Young Ballroom. Access a PDF of the Welcome Week Schedule.
