Four Suns Named to All-GSC Tennis Team

Arkansas Tech placed a school-record four student-athletes on the 2011 All-Gulf South Conference West Division tennis team, which was announced by the league office on Monday, April 25.

The Golden Suns are represented on the 2011 All-GSC West tennis team by senior Michelle Yu of Flower Mound, Texas, junior Mariel Alvarez of La Paz, Mexico, junior Akanesi Fa of Suva, Fiji, and junior Brittany Turner of Pearcy.

Before this year, Arkansas Tech had never had more than three all-conference tennis selections in any one season.

The 2010-11 Golden Suns finished 10-7 overall and 3-2 in league play. Arkansas Tech earned its fourth consecutive berth in the GSC Tennis Tournament.

Yu (photographed, top left) was 9-6 in singles play and 13-5 in doubles action this season. She earned four tennis letters at Tech and will go down in history as the only Golden Sun to participate in four Gulf South Conference Tennis Tournaments. Arkansas Tech will move forward to the new NCAA Division II Great American Conference next year.

Alvarez (photographed, top right) and Fa (photographed, bottom left) were both in their first season with the Golden Suns this year. They teamed up to go 12-3 in doubles matches during the 2010-11 season. Alvarez was 6-5 and Fa was 11-8 in singles action.

Turner (photographed, bottom right) earned her third tennis letter at Arkansas Tech during the 2010-11 academic year. She was 8-4 in singles and 13-5 in doubles.

The Golden Suns are coached by Abby Davis, a 2002 graduate of Arkansas Tech and former All-GSC tennis performer.
