Larry Smith, former sports information director at Arkansas Tech University, received the 2016 UAM Spirit Award from the University of Arkansas at Monticello during a ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 20.
Smith served as SID at Tech from 1987-2005 and was inducted into the College Sports Information Directors of America Hall of Fame in 2000. He is also a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame and he was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his duties as SID for the back-to-back NAIA national championship women’s basketball teams from Arkansas Tech in 1992 and 1993.
Previous to his tenure at Arkansas Tech, Smith was SID at UAM from 1961-78 and editor of the Advance Monticellonian newspaper in Monticello from 1978-87.
Smith was the first SID at UA-Monticello. He also served the institution as its public relations director and founded the Knights student organization.
Smith is retired and living in Russellville with his wife, Donna.
