Arkansas Tech’s Shelby Jo Fenter was named Gulf South Conference West Division pitcher of the week by the league office on Tuesday, April 5.
Fenter, a right-handed freshman from West Memphis, tossed back-to-back three-hit shutouts against Henderson State over the weekend.
She struck out 11 while defeating the Lady Reddies 2-0 on Saturday, and she recorded nine strikeouts in a 3-0 victory over HSU on Sunday. She walked just two batters in 14 innings of work.
Fenter has won her last four decisions and is 8-4 with a 2.03 earned run average this season. She ranks first in the GSC in strikeouts (120), third in opponents’ batting average (.205) and fifth in ERA.
With almost a month of regular season softball left to play, Fenter already ranks fifth in Arkansas Tech softball history in single-season strikeouts.
The school record for a single season is 220 strikeouts, which was set by Dana Aldrich when she was named GSC West Division player and pitcher of the year in 2008. Aldrich is currently serving as a graduate assistant coach for the Golden Suns.
Arkansas Tech (21-11 overall, 11-1 GSC) is ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division II South Region and is in sole possession of first place in the GSC West Division.
The Golden Suns will compete in the GSC Crossover at Decatur, Ala., beginning on Thursday, April 7.
Tech will play seven games against GSC East Division members (and prospective GSC member Lambuth University) during a four-day span.
