Farney Collects GSC Weekly Award

Arkansas Tech’s Laura Farney was named Gulf South Conference West Division defensive volleyball player of the week on Tuesday, Nov. 2.

The award marks the eighth time in nine weeks during the 2010 regular season that the Golden Suns have collected a weekly award from the GSC.

Farney has earned four GSC West player of the week nods — three offensive and one defensive. Her teammates Sarah Von Lienen — two GSC West offensive player of the week awards and one GSC West defensive player of the week honor; and Ashlynn Hamrick — last week’s GSC West defensive player of the week — have also gotten in on the act in 2010.

Farney, a junior outside hitter from Morton, Ill., had 24 digs and eight blocks while helping the Golden Suns defeat Southwestern Oklahoma State and Christian Brothers last week.

She had 15 kills, 11 digs and three blocks in Arkansas Tech’s win at CBU on Thursday, Oct. 28.

For the season, Farney ranks seventh in the GSC in kills.

Her play has helped the Golden Suns post an overall record of 28-4 and a GSC mark of 9-1 going into the final week of the regular season.

Arkansas Tech will visit Arkansas-Monticello on Tuesday, Nov. 2, and it will host Henderson State on Thursday, Nov. 4. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. The Suns need one win to clinch a share of the GSC West Division title and a No. 1 seed in the GSC Tournament.

The league’s postseason tournament will be played Nov. 12-13 at the University of West Florida in Pensacola.
