Fans Bid Wonder Boys Good Luck in Huntsville

The Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys might smile all the way to Huntsville, Ala., after the send-off they received from Tech fans on Thursday morning.

Students, community supporters, faculty and staff filled the lobby of Tucker Coliseum to wish the Wonder Boys good luck before they boarded a bus bound for the men’s NCAA Division II Tournament South Regional at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Nationally 14th-ranked Arkansas Tech (24-5), the No. 4 seed in the men’s NCAA Division II South Regional, will face fifth-seeded Benedict College of South Carolina (21-7) at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, in the first round.

The game can be heard on KWKK 100.9 FM and at www.atu.edu/techathleticaudiostreaming.shtml.

First-year head coach Doug Karleskint addressed the crowd at the send-off party. He thanked them for their support throughout the 2010-11 season, introduced his team and recognized his coaching staff.

He also assured fans that the Wonder Boys do not plan on returning to Russellville until next Wednesday. The regional semifinals are scheduled for Sunday, March 13, and the regional championship game is set for Tuesday, March 15.

All games during the men’s NCAA Division II South Regional will be played at Spragins Hall on the campus of the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

This is the third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance for the Wonder Boys. It is the longest streak of consecutive national tournament appearances for the Arkansas Tech men’s basketball program since legendary head coach Sam Hindsman led the Wonder Boys to seven straight NAIA National Tournament berths from 1950-56.
