Arkansas Tech University students will offer their final two performances of the Maurice Maeterlinck play “Pelleas and Melisande” this week.
The fall 2012 theatrical production at Arkansas Tech will conclude on Thursday, Oct. 25, and Friday, Oct. 26, with a performance each night at Witherspoon Auditorium.
Both performances will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets, which will be $8 for general admission or $5 for students, will be available at the door. Tickets will not be sold in advance.
Maeterlinck wrote “Pelleas and Melisande” during the 1890s. Dr. David J. Eshelman, associate professor of speech at Arkansas Tech and interim director of the university theatre program, translated the play from French to English.
“Pelleas and Melisande” marks Eshelman’s directorial debut with the Arkansas Tech theatre program.
“Though relatively unheard of in the United States, ‘Pelleas and Melisande’ is well-known to French-speaking audiences,” said Eshelman. “It has elements that appeal to most spectators — for example, a love triangle, a Rapunzel-like tower scene and some moving moments at a deathbed. It is interesting in every sense of the word, and an ideal play for university theatre.”
Cast members for the production include Nathan Vandeveer as Pelleas, Alisha Sears as Melisande and Braden Carson as Golaud.
Arkansas Tech student designers are responsible for all sets, lights, costumes, props, sound and special effects appearing in the production.
The show opened with three performances at the Doc Bryan Student Services Building Lecture Hall last weekend.
