Eleven In a Row: Suns Win Again

Arkansas Tech continued one of its most dominant volleyball runs in recent years on Friday by posting a shutout victory over the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers in the first match of the 2010 Arkansas Tech Hampton Inn Invitational at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville.

The Golden Suns (16-3) defeated the Chargers 25-18, 25-17, 25-18 for their 11th consecutive victory.

It is the second-longest winning streak for Arkansas Tech’s volleyball program during the seven-year tenure of Kristy Bayer as head coach. The only longer winning streak the Golden Suns have enjoyed under Bayer was a 14-match spree from Oct. 3, 2008, to Oct. 30, 2008.

The current 11-match winning streak is notable not only for its length, but for the way that Arkansas Tech has left its opponents without hope.

Eight of the 11 wins have been 3-0 shutouts, and only once during the streak — Tuesday night against Harding — have the Golden Suns been pushed to five games.

Kera Dukic (photographed) had 28 assists, six digs and three kills against UAH. Sarah Von Lienen made nine kills, Laura Farney contributed six kills and nine digs and Brennae Benda recorded 14 digs.

Brittany Ryan added five kills and three blocks for the Golden Suns, who improved to 5-0 at home in 2010.

Stacey Sargent led the Chargers (4-11) with seven kills.

Arkansas Tech will host Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m. tonight (Friday, Oct. 1) at Tucker Coliseum. No admission will be charged.
