Eight Tech Alums Coach in All-Star Games

A check of the Arkansas Tech University alumni database reveals that eight Tech graduates were selected to coach in the 2010 Arkansas High School Coaches Association All-Star Games in Fayetteville last week.

The West All-Star football coaching staff had a distinct Arkansas Tech flavor. Half of the six-man staff was occupied by Arkansas Tech alumni.

Tommy Gilleran, member of the Arkansas Tech Class of 1993, served as the West All-Stars head coach. He is head football coach at Fountain Lake High School.

Among those on Gilleran’s coaching staff last week were Josh Jones, a 2001 Tech graduate, and Chris Wood, a 1996 Tech graduate. Jones coaches at Magazine High School, while Wood coaches at Springdale Har-Ber High School.

In addition to Gilleran, two other Arkansas Tech alumni were selected to serve as 2010 AHSCA All-Star head coaches.

Daryl Fimple of North Little Rock High School was picked as the head coach for the East All-Stars in the girls’ basketball game. Fimple graduated from Tech in 1997.

Beau Thompson of Farmington High School was the head coach for the West All-Stars in the boys’ basketball game. Thompson earned his bachelor’s degree from Arkansas Tech in 1999.

Kevin Froud, member of the Arkansas Tech Class of 1998, was also on the sideline at Bud Walton Arena for the All-Star basketball festivities. He served as an assistant coach for the West All-Stars in the girls’ game. Froud is a coach at Prairie Grove High School.

Rounding out Arkansas Tech’s representatives on the All-Star coaching staffs were a pair of 2005 graduates: T.J. Stroud, a member of the Batesville High School coaching staff, and Don Earnest, who coaches at Berryville High School.

Stroud was an assistant coach for the East All-Stars in the boys’ soccer game, while Earnest was an assistant coach for the West All-Stars in that contest.
