Destination Downtown Coming Soon

Historic Downtown Russellville is the place to be on Thursday, Sept. 29, as the Russellville Downtown Association, a committee of Main Street Russellville, hosts a special no-cost event to welcome Tech students back to Russellville.Destination Downtown: The Welcome Back Tech Event was first held in 2010 after merchants repeatedly expressed a desire to reach out to the Tech student population and make them aware of the variety of businesses and services that the Downtown area has to offer. The festivities begin at 4 p.m. as students, faculty and staff are able to enjoy free food and begin a scavenger hunt taking them into participating downtown businesses. Scavenger forms and a map of Downtown participants will be available at the table located in the plaza in front of Russellville’s Historic Missouri-Pacific Railroad Depot, 320 West C. Street. Those taking part in the scavenger hunt will be eligible for drawings for door prizes from 8 until 10 p.m. during the street dance in the Depot Plaza featuring Mr. DJ, Chad Holstead. Goodie bags and special in-store drawings also will be offered by sponsoring businesses.

From 4 until 10 p.m. that evening Destination Downtown will feature food, music and entertainment including free snapshot photos by Mr. Photo Booth, a fashion show presented by IIIs Company inside the Depot, a Humvee demonstration by the U.S. Army Recruiter and much more. Activities continue to be added as excitement for the second annual event builds.

Betsy McGuire, executive director of Main Street Russellville, said, “This is our way of introducing to Tech students what downtown businesses have to offer. We are in such close proximity to Arkansas Tech, and we want students to see and experience for themselves the unique shopping and dining opportunities available in Russellville.” Students needing transportation to and from downtown for Destination Down will be able to take a shuttle from Arkansas Tech. The complimentary shuttle will begin service at 4 p.m. in front of the Doc Bryan Student Services Building. The entire event is free to Arkansas Tech students, faculty and staff.
