Defense Carries Golden Suns to Opening Win

Arkansas Tech began its 36th season of intercollegiate women’s basketball with a 58-41 non-conference win over the Christian Brothers Lady Buccaneers at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Tuesday.

The Golden Suns (1-0) held CBU to 22 percent shooting from the field in the first half while they built a 33-13 halftime lead.

Arkansas Tech missed its first 14 field goal tries to start the second half, which allowed the Lady Buccaneers (0-2) to pull within 36-25 with 12:04 remaining.

Westin Taylor’s 3-pointer with 10:42 remaining broke the ice for the Golden Suns and sparked a 7-0 run. Tech led 43-25 at the 9:31 mark of the second half and maintained at least a 14-point lead the rest of the way.

Jessica Weatherford led the Golden Suns with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Tech’s Caitlyn Spurgeon notched 10 points in her collegiate debut, while Rosie Silva added four points, nine rebounds, four assists and six steals.

Candis Clear scored a game-high 14 points for Christian Brothers. Samantha Reeves added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Bucs.

The Golden Suns will be idle until Friday, Nov. 23, when they will take on Fort Hays State during day one of the Washburn Thanksgiving Classic in Topeka, Kan. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast by KWKK 100.9 FM.
