The third annual Arkansas Junior Beta Club Convention will be held Saturday on the Arkansas Tech campus. The theme this year is “Betas, Start Your Engines.”
More than 500 junior high students from Arkansas schools will come to Russellville to have important meetings, compete in a variety of events and get inspired for success.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and students will begin practice for a talent show and submit entries for the t-shirt, scrapbook, banner, arts and crafts competitions.
The first general session will begin at 11 a.m. in Tucker Coliseum with a processional of presidents carrying banners representing their school. State Chaplain Clay Smith will present an inspirational message titled “The Marshmallow Effect.”
Josiah Prock, state president, will deliver a keynote address called “Put the Super in Your Bowl,” followed by Haley Shumate, state secretary, who will present “Time Sure Flies When You’re a Beta.”
Additionally, students will hear messages from the national junior beta sponsor, state council chair and the state sponsor.
Quiz bowl and talent competitions will be held in the afternoon, along with skits and speeches for state office candidates. Other competitions include spelling, math, speech, science, English and social studies, and poetry.
During the second general session, students will hear from State Chaplain Clay Smith once again, State Vice President Kelsie Rowland, State Reporter Carlie Rhodes, Council Chair Jerry Newton and guest speaker Jeran Tenpenny.
Awards and election results will be announced and the convention will be adjourned by the newly elected president.
Junior Beta Club is associated with Beta Club, which is for high school students in ninth through twelfth grade. The organization is committed to recognizing and promoting high academic achievement, rewarding and nurturing worthy character, fostering leadership skills and encouraging service to others.
