ATU Plans Events for MLK Jr. Day 2018

Members of the Arkansas Tech University community will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2018 with a celebration of remembrance and campus-wide community service project on Monday, Jan. 15.

The celebration of remembrance and march will begin at 5 p.m. at Hindsman Tower and end at the W.O. Young Building. From there, students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of ATU are invited to participate in a service project inside Young Ballroom.

Volunteers will prepareĀ 1,000 hygiene kits (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, etc.) for distribution at the Green and Gold Cupboard, the River Valley Shelter for Battered Women and Children and the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Arkansas River Valley.

It will mark the third consecutive year that ATU has participated in a community service project as part of its Martin Luther King Jr. Day commemoration. Over the past two years, members of the ATU community prepared more than 77,000 meals for distribution to individuals facing food insecurity through a program named The Pack Shack. Alternating to hygiene kits for the 2018 Martin Luther King Jr. Day service project aligns with feedback from local service agencies on their current needs.

The first 500 volunteers to report to Young Ballroom at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, will receive a free T-shirt.
