College of Business to Add Master's Degree

Arkansas Tech University has received approval from its Board of Trustees to offer a Master of Science degree in business administration beginning in fall 2013.

Arkansas Tech University has received approval from its Board of Trustees to offer a Master of Science degree in business administration beginning in fall 2013.

The new program is not the traditional “MBA” program that many people are familiar with.

A memorandum from Dr. John W. Watson, vice president for academic affairs, explained that the Master of Science degree in business administration that Arkansas Tech intends to offer is “designed for the student whose undergraduate degree was not in the business administration area but wishes to pursue a graduate degree with a business emphasis.”

The degree will be the first master’s degree offered by the Arkansas Tech College of Business.

In order for Arkansas Tech to offer the degree, the program proposal must be approved by the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Trustees also approved a pair of letters of notification that will be forwarded to the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board concerning existing academic programs at Arkansas Tech.

The Arkansas Tech Center for Leadership and Learning and the Arkansas Tech Graduate College gained approval from trustees to offer the existing Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership coursework through distance learning beginning in fall 2013. The program prepares candidates for licensure as a principal or assistant principal in K-12 school districts.

The other letter of notification approved by the Arkansas Tech Board of Trustees on Thursday would allow the College of Applied Sciences and the Department of Agriculture to add an option within the Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture business for students that wish to focus on feed mill management.

If approved by the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the new option would be available to students beginning in fall 2013.
