Members of the Arkansas Tech University and Arkansas River Valley populations are invited to participate in a free community emergency response team (CERT) training opportunity.
Organized by the ATU Department of Emergency Management, the CERT training will be divided into two portions.
First will be a series of online lectures, which participants will complete at their own pace. Then, from 4-8 p.m. on either Monday, Aug. 2, or Tuesday, Aug. 3, participants will engage in hands-on, practical learning on the second floor of ATU’s Rothwell Hall.
“The CERT program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations,” said Bethany Swindell, instructor of emergency management at ATU and organizer for the CERT training. “Using the training learned in the classroom and during CERT exercises, members can assist their community or workplace following an emergency event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.”
Registration is available at www.atu.edu/emergencymanagement/certtraining.php.
