Caraway Girls Present Scholarship

One group of Arkansas Tech University alumni helped make this weekend’s Homecoming festivities a moment to remember for a current student.

The group of women, who call themselves the Third Floor Caraway Girls, is part of the Arkansas Tech Class of 1959. They reconnected during their 50th reunion at Arkansas Tech, and they have returned during Homecoming for a reunion ever since.

In addition to reflecting on the past, they are also focused on making a brighter future for Tech students.

The group surprised current student Sarah Duvall Hickman with a $2500 scholarship to help her continue pursuing her degree in business education.

“I’m so honored,” said Hickman. “My husband and I were doing budgeting to figure out how to make next semester work. I’ll be doing my internship, so I won’t be able to work as many hours. We kept coming up short, and I had been praying about where that money would come from. Receiving this scholarship will help me afford my last semester of college. I am truly grateful.”

Lou Nell McCraw Davis, a retired music teacher, spoke on behalf of the group during Friday’s surprise presentation.

“As teachers, we know that you are going to be a great asset to the world,” said Davis. “We are really happy about that.”
